From practice to parade: CareSteppers spread joy with their energy and community spirit
Parades are one of the many ways CareOregon shows up in the community, demonstrating our commitment to uplifting those we serve and living out our mission. Since 2013, we’ve had fun with themed floats and giveaways and later expanded our presence with the CareSteppers, our very own dance and drill team.
“I started with CareSteppers in 2019, and I’ve been participating in every Starlight since then,” said Alexa, a CareOregon CareStepper. “When you’re walking through the streets of Portland there is lots of families and kids waving—they’re excited.”
Each year, more than 40 CareOregon employees volunteer their time to be part of the CareSteppers. From February through May, the group meets for hybrid rehearsals, learning choreography for three songs under the guidance of local dancer and choreographer Mariah.
“There are Oregonians, even from across the state, that come out to enjoy the parade,” said Meridith, a CareOregon CareStepper. “If we can just bring a smile to the community, that’s what we hope to do.”
This year’s Starlight Parade wouldn’t have been the same without the magic of the CareSteppers. Their vibrant energy and infectious enthusiasm captivated the crowd as they grooved to iconic tunes and showcased their well-rehearsed choreography through the streets of downtown Portland. Dancing alongside the dazzling lights, the CareSteppers brought a sense of unity and celebration that resonated with everyone in attendance. It was an evening filled with laughter, music and community spirit––a reminder of the joy that comes from coming together to create unforgettable memories.
