Make time for your health during Men’s Health Month
Summer is a great time to take on those projects we’ve been putting off! As we celebrate National Men’s Health Month in June, it’s also a good reminder to make time for your health. Especially if you’ve delayed health care in the past year because of COVID.
An annual wellness visit is a great place to start. Clinics are ready to see you, and they can provide safe, in-person, phone or video options.
During your annual visit, your primary care provider (PCP) can talk with you about your overall health. This includes:
Checking your blood pressure. Also, checking other risk factors for stroke and heart disease.
Reviewing your medications, to make sure they are still working for you. It’s a good idea to make a list of any medications you are taking. This includes prescriptions and over-the counter medicines.
Controlling chronic health conditions like diabetes. Patients with diabetes need regular tests, including an annual eye exam.
Answering any questions you may have about your health.
During your visit, your PCP can also talk about key tests and screening. These depend on your age and health needs:
Cancer screenings like colorectal cancer. Your provider can talk about your risk factors and options for getting tested.
The HPV vaccine. It is recommended for teens and young adults up to age 26.
The COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is a safe, effective way to protect yourself and others.
Oral health
In addition to seeing your PCP, make time to see your dentist. Jackson Care Connect members have dental coverage, including exams and cleanings. Healthy teeth are important to overall health. They are even more important if you have diabetes or other chronic health issues.
Mental health
It’s been a stressful year. If you need extra support, it’s available to you. Jackson Care Connect members are covered for mental health services like counseling. Members are also covered for substance use treatment. These services are available without a referral.
