Rogue Valley YMCA and Jackson Care Connect offer free healthy family evenings

To encourage families to participate in healthy activities, Rogue Valley YMCA and Jackson Care Connect have teamed up to offer special evenings of activities and nutrition education. There is no charge to the public for these evenings.

Family Night is held the third Friday of each month, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YMCA. Adults and kids together can take part in activities like swimming, gym games, rock climbing, volleyball and basketball. Families can visit the youth center for billiards, football, crafts and video games.

Classes in making better food choices are taught in Nutrition Workshops at the Y on the fourth Tuesday of each month, from 6 to 7 p.m.  Healthy snacks are provided.

Since January 2014, 635 people have attended Family Night and 105 people have participated in Nutrition Workshops. “We’re so happy to see attendance growing for both events each month,” said Brad Russell, executive director of Rogue Valley YMCA.

“We hope people will learn that becoming healthier can be a fun family activity,” said Heidi Hill, outreach coordinator for Jackson Care Connect, a local Coordinated Care Organization for members of the Oregon Health Plan. “Our partnership with Rogue Valley YMCA really supports this idea.”
